2. What is a Surgical Oncologist and what type of medicine do they practice?

A Surgical Oncologist is a General Surgeon who completes 3 additional years of fellowship training.  This training allows him to master the management of both routine and more complex cancer problems and better coordinate care with Medical Oncologists and Radiation Oncologists.  He is also more familiar with newer techniques and technologies which are often only available in larger, university hospitals.
