South GA cities, counties share grant money

ATLANTA, GA (WALB) - Republican Senator Greg Kirk, of Americus, recently announced that the Cities of Rebecca, Rochelle and Sylvester, as well as Lee, Tift and Turner Counties are receiving Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and administered by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA).

Lee County will receive $436,457 for water improvements, the City of Rebecca will receive $750,000 for neighborhood revitalization, the City of Rochelle will receive $750,000 for multi-infrastructure improvements, the City of Sylvester will receive $703,400 for sewer improvements, Tift County will receive $750,000 for a domestic violence shelter and Turner County will receive $415,265 for street and drainage improvements.

"While it's important that we are helping our communities to prosper economically, these grants are helping in so many other ways," said Senator Kirk. "There are many things that we can do to beautify and make certain systems within our communities work more efficiently and I am very grateful for the grants that will allow this to happen. I am also very thankful that these grants go beyond that and are funding a domestic violence shelter in Tift County. Above all else, it's important that our citizens feel safe and providing a shelter for victims of domestic abuse is a huge step in ensuring this. I'm thankful for everyone who had a helping hand in making this possible and I look forward to seeing this and the other projects in district 13 completed."

Sen. Greg Kirk serves as Chairman of the State and Local Governmental Operations Committee. He represents the 13th Senate District which includes Crisp, Dooly, Lee, Tift, Turner, and Worth counties, and portions of Sumter and Wilcox counties.
