ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Albany Autism Awareness hosted their first ever back to school event today.
The parent support group is aimed to support those that are impacted by the diagnosis of autism.
The president of the organization says going back to school for both parents and their children can be stressful due to their reactions and new environments.
She also said the purpose behind today's event was to bring more people together.
"It's just always great to be able to connect with other parents that are in the same situation as you," said Heather Johnson, the president of Albany Autism Awareness, "and they can maybe give you some information and then maybe in return you can give them some tidbits of information as well."
There were also Special Education teachers at the event giving tips to parents who are just now entering the school system.
Organizers said they wanted to stress the importance of parents learning about the process.
