COLQUITT, GA (WALB) - A new theater in Colquitt is advancing the city's entertainment life and revitalization efforts in downtown.
A space that has been vacant for over 40 years is near completion, and in a month, the theater will be an economic driver for the city's entertainment life.
City leaders are in the final phase of completing the new Colquitt State Theater.
It has been a two-year construction project for the city after the space was acquired from a previous owner.
Colquitt City Manager Cory Thomas said the 4,000 square foot building will be used as a multi-event venue like weddings, reunions and small to medium size conferences.
Thomas said this project is a part of the city's revitalization project for the downtown area.
"This is just another product of downtown revitalization that's occurring all over Southwest Georgia. Old buildings that have sat empty that communities are taking and realizing that something needs to be done with them and we put them to a use so the whole community can enjoy," said Thomas.
The theater will also have a fully loaded production system and stage for plays and movies.
City officials also said the theater will be fully operational by the end of the month.
There will be a grand opening on Tuesday, September 25.
