ALBANY, GA (WALB) - An Albany Police officer has won a national police award, and it was decided by the votes of people in the community.

Travis Goodson, who is known as the Singing Policemen by many in the community, was named Police Magazine's Community Hero of the Month.

Goodson has received national attention for his #HugACop campaign after some of his photos and videos went viral.

The magazine will now do a full article on Goodson, giving him a chance to talk about Albany and his belief in positive policing.

"I think one of the greatest opportunities that's come about in light of this, is a larger platform," said Goodson. "That police can say, hey, we're still doing good things. Kind of countering the negative media we're getting."

Goodson said he is very grateful to win the national award, which was decided by balloting to the magazine. And he knows community members had to be the ones to vote for him.
