VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

The Valdosta-Lowndes County Airport announced Thursday that after seven years of planning, the structure for the airport bridge is complete.

Valdosta Lowndes County Airport Manager Jim Galloway said they are currently training airline staff to make sure they know how to correctly and efficiently operate the new machinery.

Galloway said that if all goes according to plan, the bridge could be fully functional in a matter of days.

"So, what this does is it allows us to get our passengers up off the ground, out of the weather, out of the elements and go basically from one climate-controlled environment to another, right to the aircraft," said Galloway.

Galloway said that before this project, the airport could only handle 50 seater planes. Since then, they've tripled the size of the landing area, they can now accommodate 150 seater commercial planes or a Boeing 737. He also said the new lobby and bridge will make the process of leaving the holding area much safer.
