THOMAS CO., GA (WALB) - After five years of planning, a shooting range is coming to Thomas County.
Recently, the site was chosen by the Thomas County commissioners and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
Thomas County Public Works Construction Supervisor Jay Knight said the facility will accommodate for skeet shooting, archery, pistol and shotgun range, and will be open year round. He said Thomas County was in need of a recreational space.
"Gun and the firearms are widely used around here. And we hope that with the kids and the youth around that we can sponsor and really help out with the youth learning about the shooting and learning about firearms," explained Knight.
Knight said this was the best location because it's a mile from the nearest residence and the space was readily available since the Thomas County Sheriff's Office occasionally used the space for target practice.
Public Works also received a grant of over $1 million from the DNR to help fund the project.
Knight said there will be a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, Aug. 24, to kick off what he anticipates to be a two-year construction process.
