ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Dougherty County Commission chairman said Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital has volunteered to pay over half a million dollars on property that is tax exempt.
The announcement was made at Monday's Dougherty County Commission work session.
The hospital has committed to voluntarily make a payment in lieu of taxes (V-PILOT), in the amount of $573,000 to support taxpayers and assist the county financially.
Dougherty County Commission Chairman Chris Cohilas said this is good news for the county because this voluntary tax payment is something Phoebe doesn't have to pay.
"I requested them to consider voluntarily paying, a payment in lieu of taxes so that it would support the taxpayers. We're very thankful they agreed. They agreed to pay nearly $600,000 in taxes they would not have to pay otherwise," said Cohilas.
Officials said county staff reviewed the number of properties that were tax exempt and was successful in removing 22 properties off the tax-exempt role and onto the tax role.
Cohilas said an official press release will be sent out later this week.
