Nearly 500 backpacks disbursed in Albany to empower the community

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - With students preparing to go back to school in a month, one South Georgia church says it wants to empower the community and prepare children for the school year.

Cutting Edge Epic Center International sponsored by the Greater Temple of Refuge, gave away 500 backpacks at the Grille House in downtown Albany this weekend.

The outreach program provided backpacks stocked with school supplies for Pre-K to College students.

Event organizers said this is their way to empower the children and their families.

"The community of Albany being what it is and the devastation that have hit, 500 backpacks on a back to school event, will be good and impactful for our 16,000 students that we have in the community," said Pennica Irvin, Organizer for Cutting Edge Epic Center International.

Organizers said this event was also designed to showcase their Empowerment Conference next week.

That conference will be held at Albany State's West Campus Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
