LEE CO., GA (WALB) -

Lee County commissioners are considering adding a T-SPLOST to the county.

The special purpose local options sales tax would add a 1 cent tax on purchases to help fund transportation improvements.

T-SPLOST funds are specific for transportation needs like bridges, roadways and maintenance repairs.

The county currently does not have a T-SPLOST but commissioner Luke Singletary explained it could be a good idea.

"Resurfacing projects and road conditions, we've gotten kinda behind schedule. We've done a good job of catching up but a lot of that money comes from our general fund and with a T-SPLOST you could do a lot of resurfacing," said Singletary.

The commission will have more discussions about the transportation tax and the item would have to go onto a referendum for citizens to vote on.

They are not sure if this will be included in the November election or the 2019 election.
