TIFT CO., GA (WALB) - The Tift County School Board said it trusts its school resource officers to keep students safe.
Therefore, the school district will not arm its teachers with guns in the upcoming school year.
With the possibility of more resource officers being put in Tift County schools, members of the board said arming teachers would be unnecessary.
Board members said more resource officers would advance the safety in the schools and they want teachers to focus on being teachers.
"We feel like our teachers are already so responsible for so many things, that asking them to be additionally responsible for carrying a weapon and securing that and the safety of that is just too much to put on folks who are not trained to do that," said Tift County Schools Director of Communication Stacey Beckham.
Leaders also said the school district will continue to look for ways to revamp and upgrade security.
