DOUGHERTY CO., GA (WALB) -

The countdown to the runoff election for the Dougherty County District 2 Commission seat is on.

We are five weeks away from the highly contested seat being filled.

Victor Edwards is challenging Incumbent John Hayes for the seat Hayes has held for 13 years.

Edwards received a majority of the votes last race and hopes to do the same come July. He said he is trying to get a jail initiative in place where inmates who are about to be released are placed into a job placement program.

But the number one item on his agenda is helping small businesses expand and contribute to the economic development of Dougherty County.

"Bringing new people to the table that has had success in business and development in our city. Again, I think we have to go back and put people first," said Edwards.

Edwards said that over the next two months he will be going out and talking to the public to hear their concerns.

Just like Incumbent John Hayes, who said he hears from his residents in District 2 and represents them fully.

Hayes' focus will be on continuing to invest in the community and all of it's citizens.

One of the accomplishments he is most proud of is the improvements he's made in Robert Cross Park and the multipurpose facility.

"It represents about a 1.3 million dollar investment in a community where you seldom see that kind of investment, you create a quality of life and ultimately my vision. And I've worked for this in my time in office, is creating a vibrant Dougherty County," said Hayes.

Another issue Hayes is tackling is crime and gun violence.

The runoff election will be held July 24.
