South Georgia investigators say there are a few things you can do to protect yourself if you interact with people you don't know on social media.

This came after a Florida police officer was charged with threatening a Lowndes County woman and her family after she refused to send him nude photos of herself.

The officer is someone she met on Instagram and didn't really know.

Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk said to help prevent these kinds of situations, keep your profiles and personal information private and make sure you know the person you're talking to well.

"If you feel that it is truly a threat, you know, we want to know about it, we are going to investigate it. So, don't sit around and wait for something to happen, make us aware of it," said Paulk.

Officials encourage you to be overly cautious when you talk to someone new, but if you ever get threats from that person, don't be afraid to contact authorities.
