ALBANY, GA (WALB) - An Albany leader is challenging residents and local business owners to "buy into Albany State University."
Ward 3 City Commissioner BJ Fletcher said the school is vital to the city's success.
She's also challenging ASU to "buy into downtown" by helping the city create new ways to get students more involved.
Fletcher believes the move will help retain graduates and prompt more companies to consider Albany for expansion.
"When companies look at you they don't just look at the building you give them and the tax breaks. They're bringing families here. They want to know what is their entertainment. What good churches do they have? What good restaurants do they have? What are they going to do after they work eight or 10 hours? We have to answer those questions and make sure that we're business friendly and that we bring everybody in," explained Fletcher.
City leaders have several initiatives already in place to spur development in downtown.
