ASHBURN, GA (WALB) -

Ashburn's police chief confirmed Tuesday that City Manager Sedric Carithers passed away unexpectedly on Saturday.

Carithers served as the city's first black mayor and became city manager in 2016.

He was born and raised in Ashburn and graduated from both Albany State University and Valdosta State University.

Police Chief Cliff Jordan issued a statement on the loss of Carithers, calling him a "great leader and great friend."

"Carithers was just a pleasure, a blessing to come across the city of Ashburn," said Jordan. "He loved his family. He loved this city. A great person and will be missed by everyone, not just by city employees, but by the city as a whole."

Carithers leaves behind his mother and father, three brothers, his wife, three children, and grandchildren.

The public is invited to a funeral service at St. Luke Baptist Church on Leary Road in Ashburn, Thursday, May 17, at 11 a.m.
