LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) -

One Lowndes County man is dead after being found in a pond.

The Lowndes County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Gary Sandlin, 56, fell into a pond on his walk home and drowned.

It happened in the 2900 block of Kinderlou Road around 2 a.m. on Monday.

Deputies said Sandlin was discovered by his brother.

Investigators said that according to family members, Sandlin could not swim.

Captain Stryde Jones with the sheriff's office said there is no reason to suspect foul play.

"I think this is just a good example of a very tragic accident. Somebody that was very familiar with his surroundings, probably walking extremely comfortable with his surroundings as he walked. Terrible accident, people just need to be careful, be aware of what's going on around them," said Jones.

Jones said that community members should always be vigilant, no matter how familiar they may be with the area.
