ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

If you take the Liberty Expressway on your morning commute, you need to know that one of the lanes on Liberty Expressway might be closed due to some much-needed maintenance starting May 14.

Drivers who take the bypass will need to be aware in the coming weeks.
Georgia Department of Transportation says this project's goal has the drivers safety in mind.
After the January 2017 tornado, downed trees and power lines caused major problems and cleanup along the bypass.

To prevent this problem in the future, GDOT is removing trees, limbs, and other vegetation that could become road hazards.

Debris blocking roadways resulted in 161 fatalities and hundreds of injuries statewide last year.

The nearly $600,000 project will focus on vegetation between Holly Drive and the Flint River and will include exits and ramps.

The project must be finished within 120 days, and drivers are asked to be on the lookout for flaggers and prepare for possible lane closures.
