ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Ahead of Mother's Day, a teacher in Dougherty County hosted an 'Empowerment Conference,' to help young girls celebrate sisterhood and motherhood in a special way.

Brainiacs 21st Century Learning's Girl Code Program hosted the motivational event for young girls.

Many in attendance are dealing with life barriers, and some have even lost their mothers.

Organizers said women typically have empowerment conferences, but they wanted to design one for young girls to find an outlet for hope and motivation.

"As a teacher, the motivation sometimes is low and I wanted to do something different with my girls. Being a young woman myself, it's always important to increase motivation with our young girls," said Yineka Jefferson, Organizer for Girl Code, Brainiacs 21st Century Learning.

Next Sunday, the organization will host a 'Father and Son Empowerment Day,' featuring Doughnuts with Dad and a father verses son basketball tournament.

That's at Westover High School at 1 p.m. next Sunday.
