ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The SOWEGA Council on Aging opened up its doors to celebrate Older American's Month with their seniors.

In May, the organization honors seniors at all locations in the state by hosting an open house celebration.

The community got to tour the facility, learn about the programs and engage with the members.

SOWEGA said the engagement from the community keeps seniors up to speed socially.

"We want to keep people engaged. As people age a lot of times they can withdraw and not be as socially active. So senior centers are a great way to stay engaged in your community. You can volunteer, you can come as a member. You can just learn about the programs and services that we have," said SOWEGA Associate Director Izzie Sadler.

Later this month, the organization will continue the celebration with a picnic for registered members.
