AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a human fetus was found lodged in a piece of equipment at a wastewater treatment plant in Georgia.

Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen tells The Augusta Chronicle that workers performing maintenance on a pipe at Augusta's J.B. Messerly Water Pollution Control Plant made the discovery on Monday. Bowen says the fetus appeared to be about 20 weeks old.

The gender and race are not currently known.

Bowen says his office and the sheriff's criminal investigation division are trying to determine how the fetus got to the plant. The remains are being sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation lab in Atlanta for an autopsy.
