CORDELE, GA (WALB) -

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Cordele Police Department are investigating a homicide that happened Saturday morning.

According to CPD, officers responded to the 400 block of East 21st Avenue about a shooting.

They found two people had been shot. One of them was dead on scene.

Police say the second person was taken to Crisp Regional Hospital in critical condition.

No suspects were at the scene when police arrived.

Cordele Police Chief Rob Rodriguez released a statement on the shooting.

“This is awful, just awful, a senseless act of violence that has resulted in the unnecessary taking of a life. The Agents and Investigators are diligently working to bring the individual(s) responsible for this heinous crime to justice. Due to the fact that this is an active and ongoing investigation, the names of the victims have not been released.” - Cordele Police Chief Rob Rodriguez

COMMUNITY REACTION

"This is something that I've never witness in this neighborhood and I've been here six years," said Martha Mobley, Neighborhood Resident.

Mobley said when she woke up this morning to walk her dog, her normal day changed quickly.

She heard the gunshots at a home just a few doors down from her apartment.

"It happened so fast, and I wasn't expecting none of this but I woke up to the sirens and the gun shooting. It's just crazy because we never had nothing like this in the neighborhood," said Mobley.

The community and officers said this isn't the norm for this area.

"I wouldn't say that we see things like this in this community," said LT Andrew Roufs, Cordele Police Department.

Neighbors said it's typically quiet and peaceful on this street, this shooting leaving them shocked. Now, they're trying to unite to find out what happened.

"We all need to pull together, we just need to be on a neighborhood watch now, because it's too close to home and it's real scary," said Mobley.

The community wants answers and for anyone involved to come forward.

"If they know, they just need to come clean and just let them know because that's sad," said Mobley.

Right now police said they can't release the time of the shooting, or the names of the victims or suspects.
