Baton Rouge officer comes through Valdosta on 1,500 mile bike ride to D.C.

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

One police officer is putting over a thousand miles behind her to raise awareness and support for law enforcement.

Officer Deena Weissberg was welcomed by the Valdosta Police Department as she rode into town on her bicycle.

She is making a 1,500-mile journey to Washington D.C. from Baton Rouge, Louisiana on behalf of the Baton Rouge Back the Blue Fundraiser.

Weissberg wanted to raise money for the Baton Rouge Police Union, which helped out with medical bills back in 2016 when several officers were ambushed.

She also wants to show police in a positive light.

"I'm not going to try and say there aren't bad eggs in every bunch, but it's every bunch, and the vast majority of people get into law enforcement because it's a calling, it's not a choice," said Weissberg.

Weissberg said the goal is to raise $20,000 and she has already reached $17,000.

She started her journey on April 30, and she is expecting to be in D.C. by May 11 or 12.

    With Memorial Day around the corner, one Southwest Georgia military fraternity decided to host a blood drive in honor of fallen soldiers and to give back to the community.  Psi Delta Tau Military Fraternity Incorporated held the event at a neighborhood Wal-Mart to help those in need.
