TIFT CO., GA (WALB) - For 40 years, Patrick Atwater has been part of the Tift County School System.
But next year, that service will come to a close.
Atwater announced his retirement earlier this week.
In his time as superintendent, the school system has seen many positive changes, including the recent realignment and expansion of schools in the area.
"The timing is perfect," said Atwater. "I will be able to see one big movement to an end. And the incoming superintendent would be able to see a new one at its beginning. It's perfect timing."
He will officially retire in June of 2019.
He said he plans to go on more finishing trips, assist the new superintendent if asked, and spend more time in the community.
