DOUGHERTY CO., GA (WALB) - A jury is deliberating the fate of murder suspect Courtland Hughley.

Hughley is accused of murder and several other charges from an incident that happened during the weekend of Albany State's homecoming.

During closing arguments, District Attorney Greg Edwards said Hughley fatally shot Zemal Fuentes, 21, last October at the Quality Inn. The prosecution argues it was a drug deal gone bad.

"The evidence has shown that they have engaged in large amounts, these are big bags. This is the type of marijuana usage we're talking about here," Edwards said.

Inside the courtroom Thursday, multiple charges were dismissed because of a lack of evidence.

Defense Attorney Ben Davis said the shooting was self-defense.

"They don't comment on the fact that their own witnesses testified that they never matched the bullet that was taken out of Mr. Fuentes to the gun they believe killed Mr. Fuentes," said Davis.

Two other men also face charges in this case.

David Quimbey faces multiple charges, including murder.

A third man, Kendravious Web, faces a charge for tampering with evidence.

According to the indictment, he took the victim's cell phone after the shooting in an attempt to throw off investigators.

The jury has been dismissed for the day and deliberations will resume Friday morning.
