ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Lee County has started installing new software to protect their computer system and information.
Lee County has noticed other Georgia cities like Atlanta and Savannah having their computer systems hacked, and are taking preemptive steps to try to keep it from happening to them.
The county has hired the software company Network Technology Solutions to install top of the line software to protect the information stored in their computer network.
Matthew Bradshaw with Network Technology Solutions says the best way to protect information is to have layered security because of all of the different types of encryptions out there.
"There is thousands of strains of ransom ware that are produced every day and the real interest there is for monetary gain from people that pay the ransom," said Bradshaw.
The installation of the new software began Tuesday.
Commissioners approved using SPLOST funds to pay for the computer upgrades.
