Georgia counties celebrate 'Georgia Cities Week'

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Several South Georgia counties will celebrate Georgia Cities Week, starting Monday, April 23 through Saturday, April 28. 

This year's theme is "Georgia's Cities in the Spotlight."

The purpose of this week is to give cities an opportunity to share information about the valuable services cities provide to residents and how cities positively impact their quality of life.

This week is also an opportunity to celebrate community achievements and recognize volunteers and city employees.

City of Sylvester

Monday, April 23

Mock City Council Meeting- 6:30 p.m. 

Tuesday, April 24

Tree Planting- 11 a.m. at Shipp Park

City Hall- 2 p.m. 

Wednesday, April 25

Employee Appreciation Luncheon- 12 p.m. (Employees Only) 

Equipment Show/ City Hall Parking Lot- 1 p.m.-5 p.m. 

Thursday, April 26

Cities Week Celebration Lunch (Invitation Only) 

Business After Hours- 5 p.m.-7 p.m. 

Friday, April 27

Governmental Tour 

Concert featuring The Grapevine Band (Free Admission)- 7 p.m.-10 p.m.

Opening Act- Corey Sumner 6 p.m.-6:30 p.m. and Thomas Merritt 6:30 p.m.-7 p.m.

Saturday, April 28

15th Annual Great Sylvester Cleanup- 8 a.m.- 1 p.m.

    Here in Southwest Georgia the American Red Cross has been working the last couple of days to prepare for the storm.  The American Red Cross has been getting their relief supplies ready across the 19 county region.

    With Memorial Day around the corner, one Southwest Georgia military fraternity decided to host a blood drive in honor of fallen soldiers and to give back to the community.  Psi Delta Tau Military Fraternity Incorporated held the event at a neighborhood Wal-Mart to help those in need.

    The weather didn't stop one Albany church from having a nice southern barbeque.       St. James Missionary Baptist Church held their third annual 'Unity in the Community BBQ event' Saturday.  They gave away hundreds of food and clothing items.
