Spring Fling Festival brings more people into Moultrie businesses

Moultrie's Main Street department staff say the Spring Fling Festival brings in about 7,000 people each year.

Some businesses in the Downtown Square said their sales increase dramatically during the Spring Fling weekend.

Macie Hegwood said she can remember growing up in Moultrie and attending the festival when she was younger.

"Oh yes, I remember going, it used to be called Festival in the Square, I remember going, we would always load up the car and go with all the kids and do all the fun events," said Hegwood.

Now Hegwood owns her own small business, The Flossy Peach, and gets to experience all the fun events downtown, but with a new role.

Events like this help get exposure for the business and bring new customers in the doors.

"Even though we've been open for almost a year now, we still see people come in for the first time. This morning, we had someone come in and said she's from Moultrie but she's never been in here so we still have local people that are just finding out about it and we still have people from out of town that come in," said Hegwood.

Other business owners like Hart Brown, with Three Crazy Bakers, said they look forward to big events in the Downtown Square.

"Oh absolutely, it's a very busy day and a real fun day downtown," said Brown.

Most shop owners, including Hegwood and Brown said they have to prepare ahead of time for the event, bringing in staff and extra inventory.

"We always have to be careful with our staffing, make sure we have extra food and order more food and just get ready," said Brown.

"We just went to market last week and brought back extra goodies from that. And we are prepping for Spring Fling, we have extra help coming in so that we can serve all the customers," explained Hegwood.

Many store owners said they will be extending their hours Saturday for people to come in and shop.

    Here in Southwest Georgia the American Red Cross has been working the last couple of days to prepare for the storm.  The American Red Cross has been getting their relief supplies ready across the 19 county region.

    With Memorial Day around the corner, one Southwest Georgia military fraternity decided to host a blood drive in honor of fallen soldiers and to give back to the community.  Psi Delta Tau Military Fraternity Incorporated held the event at a neighborhood Wal-Mart to help those in need.
