LEE CO., GA (WALB) - A group of Lee County middle schoolers is preparing to compete in the world finals of the Odyssey of the Mind competition.
Odyssey of the Mind is one of the biggest creativity contests in the world.
The format is a set of five problems for kids across the world to choose from that range from building a car to interpreting literary classics.
The Lee County team has chosen to compete with an eight-minute dramatic interpretation of a literary classic.
The team is made of six, sixth and seventh graders.
Instructor Hannah Odom said that this is the first time in history that a team from Lee County has made it to the world finals.
The most important part of this competition is that it's led solely by the students.
"Getting to see their creativity come out because they actually have to sign a form when they go to all three levels of competition saying they received no outside assistance, no help from me, no help from the interest or anyone outside their group," said Odom.
There will be a car wash and bake sale on May 5 at Mullins Pools from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to help raise money for the team's travel expenses.
The team will travel to the University of Iowa for finals on May 23.
