ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A fair housing meeting took place earlier Thursday afternoon at the MicroBusiness Enterprise Building.
Members of the industry and consumers gathered to better inform themselves and others of their rights and to celebrate the Fair Housing Act's 50th anniversary.
The Fair Housing Act was signed in 1968 to prohibit any discrimination in real estate transactions.
The act covers seven protected classes such as race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, and disability.
Thelma Watson says there are 4 million Fair Housing Incidents every year, and they want to inform people of their rights.
"What we've found is there's not a lot of information available around fair housing," said coordinator Thelma Watson. "It's definitions, it's benefits, and this is one of our outreach efforts to educate the public about fair housing."
They hope they can inform everyone about their rights and close the fair housing gap.
