MOULTRIE, GA (WALB) - A national BBQ sauce was developed in Moultrie in the 70's and it began with two neighbors making a liquor exchange for a small batch of sauce.
Joe Kem's Bar-B-Que Sauce started out as a neighborhood trade and later became a family owned acclaimed sauce and catering company nationwide.
The Kem's recreated the sauce after their neighbor died in 1990.
Now, the sauce has been featured in Southern Magazine several times and in several major food stores across the country like Publix, Harveys, Piggly Wiggly and IGA.
In 2016, the Kems won the 'Flavor of Georgia' competition.
"We've come up with some unique recipes and our sauces are unique. Mostly, everybody that tries it, they're hooked on it," said Co-Owner of Joe Kem's BBQ Sauce and Catering Joe Kem Lacey.
"We're a small business here in Moultrie and Colquitt County that's been successful and I guess we can be an example for other small businesses to go out take a shot and maybe you could be successful too," said J Lacey, Co-Owner of Joe Kem's BBQ Sauce and Catering.
Joe Kem and J Lacey is the father-son duo behind the two sauces and BBQ rub.
They said they plan to keep their 'finger licking sauce' in their family for many more years to come.
