Places to stay ahead of Hurricane Irma

As Irma begins to head to land, Southwest Georgia is one of the first places evacuees from Florida and coastal Georgia will head. And in the south, we offer southern hospitality. Below is a list that includes links to places to stay in the area for evacuees. WALB will continue to update the information as we learn of more resources.

Where to stay: Most if not all hotels in the area are booked and waiting lists on some of them are currently as long as 80 people, but there are still places offering evacuees a place to stay:

  • In AlbanyChehaw Park and The Exchange Club of Albany are able to host about 275 RVs between the two destinations. As of Thursday morning, the hookups were full. If people simply need a 110 electric hookup, a place to park, to dump, or fill up their water tank they can take as many as will fit.
  • The American Red Cross is going to open a shelter at the Albany Civic Center, 100 W Oglethorpe Blvd, Albany, GA 31701, at 6 p.m. Saturday.
  • Albany High School will be open as a shelter in place.
  • Four Good Samaritan shelters at churches have been opened
    • Friendship Baptist Church, 400 Pine Ave, Albany, GA 31701
    • Sherwood Baptist Church, 2201 Whispering Pines Rd, Albany, GA 31707
    • East Albany Church of God, 216 Pine Bluff Rd, Albany, GA 31705

  • Places you can take your pets for shelter:
    • Albany Humane Society: OPEN, 1705 West Oakridge Drive, Albany, Georgia 31707
    • Magnolia Pet Resort: 628 Fussell Rd, Leesburg, GA 31763

  • Ben Hill County:
    • Arbor Baptist Church N. Merrimac Drive opens Sunday at 2 p.m. 
    • Ben Hill County Elementary School Gym N. Lobingear Ave. Opens Sunday at 5 p.m.
  • Cairo:
    •  Agri-Center, 65 11th Ave. NE,  MAX CAPACITY
    • Cairo High School’s gymnasium 455 Fifth St. SE
    • Family Worship Center, 1760 U.S. 84.
    • Midway Baptist Church, 2389 GA Highway 93 S
    •  Pine Level Baptist Church, 298 Pine Level Rd.
  • Coffee County:
    • ??Holiness Baptist Campground located on Hwy 32 E?
    • Calvary Holiness Campground located on Hwy 441
  • Colquitt County
  • Gym located at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex. (West of CVS)  open 6:00 p.m. Sunday  for 24 hours.
  • Heritage  Church located on the corner of Pavo Road and Gene McQueen Road.  Open 6:00 p.m. for 24 hours.
  • Kingwood Baptist Church located on Veterans Parkway next door to KFC.  Open 5:00 p.m. Sunday for 24 hours.
  • Moultrie- Ryce Community Center, 305 7th Ave NW Moultrie, Ga 31768
  • Moultrie- R D Youth Center, 700 5th Ave NW Moultrie, Ga 31768
  • Crisp County Motorsports Park is opening their camp grounds.
  • In Crisp County: The American Red Cross opened a shelter on Friday for evacuees. The school is located at 1001 Blackshear Road in Cordele.
  • In Randolph County: The Red Cross has opened a shelter at First Baptist Church, the address is 567 College St. in Cuthbert.
  • In Tifton: Red Cross Shelter - The Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College's Gym at 2802 Moore Highway in Tifton.
    • Comfort Stations opening at 6 p.m. Sunday (For Tift County residents only: Tift Co Recreation Department Gym at 401 North Victory Drive in Tifton
    • Leroy Rogers Center
    • 8th St Middle School Tift County Recreation Department.
  • The American Red Cross may open more shelters in Southwest Georgia, you can find when and where shelters are open on the American Red Cross website.
    • Other shelters: Blackshear Trail Elementary: open at 6 p.m. Address: 1001 Blackshear Road, Cordele, GA 31015
    • First Baptist Church of Cuthbert: open at 2 p.m Address: 567 College St, Cuthbert, GA 39840
  • The Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry will serve as an Equine evacuation site. On-site dry camping will be available for those housing equine at the facility during their stay. Space is first-come, first-served.
  • Airbnb has activated its disaster response program for people to host evacuees for free
  • The Moultrie RV park has opened and has room for 400 RVs
  • The City of Sylvester announced a business is opening a parking lot for RVs at 116 East Kelly Street. 
    • Greater New Bethel Baptist Church. 1001 E. Franklin Street Sylvester, Ga 31791 229-463-7058
  • Americus: Friendship Camp - 2404 Hwy 30 W. Have RV sites, beds, showers and food. Call Tina Fendley 229-886-9971.
  • Brooks County: Good Samaritan shelter opening at 2 p.m. Sunday at Quitman Church of God on Screven Street. Also Wings of Eagles Inc. on South Madison will be open.
  • Mitchell County -  
    • Pelham - Good Samaritan shelter opened at the First Baptist Church.
      • Pelham is making arrangements for 40-50 RVs for parking. Will not have hookups. You can call City Hall at 229-294-7900, the police department at 229-264-6001, or the fire department at 229-294-6012.
    • Camilla - Good Samaritan shelter opens at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mitchell Co. High School.
    • Sale City - Sale City Community Center.
  • Baker County: Thankful Baptist Church on Highway 91 in Baker County will be opening its doors Sunday at 5:00 pm and acting as a shelter for members of the community. Please contact Deacon Johnny Long (229)854-2753, Deacon Charles Parks (229)734-0151 or Pastor Wadis Williams (229)886-9644 for assistance or more information.
    • If you have not located shelter elsewhere and need a place to stay during the storm. Traveler's Rest FWB Church located at 3138 Travelers Rest Road, Newton, Ga. 39870 will provide a shelter. If you are interested you MUST call 229-310-9246 by 4:00 pm today.  The Church will only be open if there are people to call and express the need to stay in the shelter.  The Church will be available to provide shelter on an as needed basis from 6:00 pm until tomorrow afternoon. 
  • Stewart County:
    • Florence Marina State Park
    •  Ebenezer Baptist Church in Lumpkin will open at 6 a.m. Monday.
    • Richland Baptist Church will open at 6 a.m. Monday.
  • Sumter County:
    • Jerusalem Grove Baptist Church, ??211 Rhodes St, Smithville, GA 31787
  • Turner County:
    • Bethel Baptist Church 2245 Bethel Rd, Sycamore, GA
