On a day that started off hot and cooled as the sun went down, Lee County did the opposite.
The Trojans cut down on their mistakes in the 2nd half to defeat Mary Persons 21-17 in the Corky Kell Classic.
Special teams was the Achilles heel early on at Mercer University. The first score for Mary Persons was a blocked field goal where the Trojans stood around as it was returned for 6.
The Trojans would turn it over three more times, all fumbles, and limped into the half tied at 14. Dean Fabrizio got the Trojans back on pace for victory in the locker room.
"We just had to settle down and play the way we were capable of playing, and play the way we're coached to play," said Fabrizio as his Trojans lined up for the victory song in Five star Stadium. "I've got to give credit to Mary Persons. They came out ready to play and outplayed us for a good portion of the game. Fortunately we were able to rally ourselves and get the win at the end."
Playing on a Thursday has its perks. Lee county will get an extra day of rest/prep for their home opener vs. Bainbridge August 25th.
