ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Dozens of elderly people learned about balance Thursday and how they can try to prevent themselves from a fall.
It was part of Phoebe's Golden Key Monthly Health Seminars.
Thursday's session focused on proprioception, the awareness of where you are in a space.
Physical Therapy Assistant Kelly Thompson said one in four elderly people have falls.
She said those falls lead to more than 65 percent of deaths in the geriatric population.
"There's a lot of things that happen to our body as we age. Our range of motion decreases, our muscle strength decreases and so we have to actually work a little harder," said Thompson.
Thompson said you can move items around in your home to make it safer.
She also said you can also practice weight shift and balance activities.
Phoebe offers classes to help with that.
They have special equipment, like machines to help people with balance.
