VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

With football season just around the corner, Lowndes County and the City of Valdosta are reminding everyone to stay hydrated.

The Winnersville Classic is this Friday and will attract hundreds of people to the Lowndes High School football stadium.

Lowndes County Public Information Officer Paige Duke said that everyone should drink plenty of water before heading out into the extreme temperatures.

She said people should try to stay away from sports drinks, sodas, or any drink that contains a large amount sugar or carbonation.

"We are experiencing right now some of the hottest temperatures of the summer,” said Dukes. “It is August, we expect August to be hot, we start out a little cooler in the morning but by midday afternoon it is extremely hot."

Dukes said the elderly and children should drink throughout the day, especially if they are not used to be being outdoors for long periods of time.
