How South Georgia schools are preparing for the solar eclipse

On August 21, millions of people will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to see a total solar eclipse across the United States.

Even though most of Georgia won't see a total solar eclipse, school systems across Southwest Georgia are making preparations ahead of August 21.

Here are the schools who have posted their plans:

Atkinson County:

  • Delayed dismissal by 30 minutes

Ben Hill County:

  • Schools will follow the early dismissal schedule:
    • PreSchool - 11:15 a.m.  Bus Riders and 11:30 a.m. Car Riders
    • Primary School – 11:30 a.m. Bus Riders and 11:45 a.m. Car Riders
    • Elementary School – 12:00 p.m. for Bus Riders and 12:15 p.m. Car Riders
    • Middle School - 11:45 a.m.  Car Riders 12: 00 p.m. (All Long Distance Bus Riders) 12:15 p.m.  (All other Bus Riders)
    • High School – 11:45 a.m. Car Riders and (All Long Distance Bus Riders) 12:15 (All other Bus Riders)

Berrien County:

  • To be decided

Brooks County:

Clinch County:

Crisp County:

  • Normal dismissal times for elementary-high school.
  • Primary and Pre-K will dismiss 30 minutes later.
  • Certified safety glasses rated ISO 12312-2 will be provided for students.
  • Parents may still pick students up at the normal dismissal times.

Coffee County:

Colquitt County:

  • Colquitt County Elementary schools will be dismissing 30 minutes, but all other schools are following regular schedule.

Cook County:

Decatur County:

Dooly County:

Dougherty County:

Early County:

  • Dismissal will be delayed until 3:15 p.m.

Echols County:

Grady County:

  • Dismissal delayed by 30 minutes

Irwin County:

  • Will have early dismissal for all schools at 12:35 p.m.

Lanier County:

Lee County:

Lowndes County:

  • Schools will be dismissed early. Below is the schedule:
    •  Elementary Schools:  1st Load – 11:30 a.m.
      • 2nd Load – 12:00 p.m.
    • Middle Schools – 12:30 p.m.
    • Lowndes High School & Parker Mathis Learning Center – 12:00 p.m.

Miller County:

  • Dismissing at 3:30 p.m.

Thomas County:

Tift County:

Turner County:

  • To be decided

Valdosta City Schools:

  • Schools will be closed for the day

Worth County:

  • Following normal dismissal schedule
