TIFT CO., GA (WALB) - School leaders in Tift County are preparing for the upcoming grade realignment which includes housing all through 9th through 12th graders under one roof. But in order for that to happen, the school needs more space.
The Tift Co. Board of Education broke ground on the expansion last year.
Robby Dasher, Tift County School's Operations Director, said the project will open in multiple phases.
This November, several classrooms, lab, and administrative office space will be available to staff and students.
By the end of the school year, school leaders hope to have around 30 additional classrooms and an auxiliary gym ready to go.
Dasher said the construction work is running smoothly, but they did face one challenge over the summer which was all the rain.
"We don't anticipate any delays from that. It's just something that we have to work through. We can't control the weather, so we adjust and keep moving forward," Dasher said.
Crews are also working on a new driveway that will be used by those who carpool to school.
Once the additional space is complete, Dasher said crews will work on renovating the older parts of the building.
School leaders hope to have the construction completed by August 2018.
