THOMAS CO., GA (WALB) - The former prison in Thomas County will soon be knocked down.
Commissioners said they have made the decision to demolish the property.
It is scheduled to be done sometime later in the fall.
Commissioner Wiley Grady said that they still have to remove the inventory from the vacant building.
"Declare all of the property salvage and we will have an auction to dispose of it and then the building will be demolished by county crews." explained Grady.
The surplus sale date is expected to be sometime in September.
Last November, county commissioners approved a budget that did not include money for the prison, saving the county about $300,000.
Conditions at the prison have deteriorated over the years.
Commissioners said if they kept the prison they would have had to build a new facility.
Thomas County was one of only 23 counties in Georgia that still had a county prison.
The Prison employed 29 people and housed 185 inmates.
