14. Is laparoscopic fundoplication cost effective?

Three cost utility analyses of long-term medical therapy versus laparoscopic fundoplication for GERD have shown that the cost of surgery was less than that of lifelong daily therapy with proton pump inhibitors.

The point when medical and surgical therapies were similar cost was 17 months for laparoscopic fundoplication.  All three studies concluded that laparoscopic fundoplication was the most cost effective form of treatment for patients likely to need lifelong therapy.
