DOUGHERTY CO., GA (WALB) - Dougherty County Police are asking any witnesses to come forward in a fatal accident that killed Alexis Charmane Whitted, 22.
Police and coroner Michael Fowler first reported this was a hit and run, but Captain Tom Jackson with Dougherty County police said that for now, this is not a hit and run investigation.
Rather, it's a fatality wreck investigation.
Police said Whitted was driving along the 3100 block of Moultrie Road around 4 or 4:30 Friday morning.
At some point, police said Whitted veered off the road, and her car hit a culvert.
Captain Jackson said, at some point after that, Whitted left her car and was hit by another car.
"It's out in an area that is desolate out there. It was dark last night. Very dark. It was an overcast sky. So there was hardly any lighting out there," said Captain Jackson. "Sometimes it's not uncommon if someone is on a roadway, or gets in a roadway, can be struck by a vehicle, due to the lighting in the area."
The department is not looking for suspects at this time, as they have not confirmed this is a hit and run situation.
Instead, they're looking for witnesses who may have been traveling along Moultrie Road at that time.
The department asks you to give them a call with any information you might have.
The number for the Dougherty County Police Department is 229-430-6600.
