THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

If you are in Thomasville and visit Cherokee Lake you may notice that it looks a little bit different.

The lake is being drained as crews prepare to work on the dam.

City staff said the park is still open for running and recreational activities.

They just have a few safety tips for park users.

"What we're encouraging people not to do is walk around the edge of the lake. That mud is still pretty thick and so for safety, we'd like to encourage people to stay away from the lake's edge and use more of the boardwalk and dock areas," said Lauren Radford, director of engagement and outreach.

If you like to fish, city staff said now is the time.

With less water, you might be able to catch some of the bigger fish in the lake.
