ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Thousands of Dougherty County students are hitting the books once again, and that number is down slightly from this time last year.
Right now there are almost 15,000 students registered in the school system.
Not all those students were in school the first two days.
School spokesman J. D. Sumner said it's common for the number of students to fluctuate during the first few weeks of school.
"We're down a little bit which we expected, but it's really just a handful of kids at each school so far. We're talking 15 to 20 kids in some schools with some pockets of maybe 20 to 30 at others," said Sumner.
Sumner said the Georgia Department of Education told school system leaders that the number of students would decrease over the next few years.
There are also a handful of students who were impacted by January's storms.
Some of those students have not returned to school.
