Coroner Austin Fiveash has confirmed that remains found in Valdosta are human.
The investigation began on July 27 when the Valdosta Police Department were called to a home in the 900 block of Charlton Street.
Neighbors reported smelling a foul odor, which led officials to the skeletal remains.
They were sent the GBI crime lab for an autopsy.
Fiveash says it could take several weeks or months until an identification is made.
Police said they will be investigating this as a homicide.
