LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) -

An investigation has begun after over $36,000 was found in a trunk during a traffic stop.

A Georgia State Patrol trooper pulled a vehicle over for failure to move over while Lowndes County Captain Ed Christian performed a traffic stop on I-75 Sunday evening just after 5 p.m.

Captain Stryde Jones said Christian's K-9 was tipped off to something inside the car that was pulled over for failure to move over.

After searching the vehicle, GSP found 33 bundles of U.S. currency totaling just over $36,000 in a speaker located in the trunk.

Both the driver and passenger said they had no knowledge of the money or where it came from.

Jones said GSP confiscated the money.

The investigation into where the money came from, why the K-9 unit was tipped off and why it was hidden in the trunk has begun.

No arrests were made.

*Editorial Note: This story has updated to reflect new information about the reason for the confiscation of the money that officials released since this story was written.*
