ASHBURN, GA (WALB) -

A new doctor's office in Turner County has virtually eliminated the commute for parents needing after-hours urgent care for their kids.

Ashburn Family Practice and Pediatrics has Turner County's first pediatrician.

The office, located at 317 E. Washington Avenue, is open from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. on weekdays and on the weekends, so it gives parents a good option for after-hours care instead of driving 20 or 30 miles to Cordele or Tifton.

The office provides wellness checks and sick visits, and walk-ins are accepted.

"This is a huge, huge step for Turner County," said Keri Altman, a family nurse practitioner at the practice. "This is a great resource. Most of (the people who work here) are from here, and so it's just wonderful for our county."

The clinic will also partner with the Turner County School System starting this year.

An on-site nurse practitioner will partner with school nurses to treat students' symptoms at no cost to the schools.
