Two former Lee County track athletes are taking their talents to the next level, but first they had to make it official in front of family and friends.
Lakendra Wafford is staying in-state to run track for Paine College.
She was a leader for the Lady Trojans first region championship in school history.
Wafford will be a sprinter in Augusta after putting in extra work with the Trojans coaching staff to prepare for the fall.
"They told me to go to weight room," said Wafford." We lifted weight and got my legs stronger and my abs tighter and they helped me get ready for Paine college."
Tucker Smith will pole vault for the division III program Berry College.
Smith was the region 1-AAAAAA pole vault champion, and placed third in state.
Both are thankful for how the Trojans program prepared them.
"They just always support you and they're behind you," said Smith. Whatever you want to do. So they motivate you to keep going."
Wafford leaves Friday for Augusta, Smith has a couple weeks before heading to Berry.
"They're getting foundation for their lives an they're getting opportunity," said girl's track & field coach Kaion Hamilton. "Not everybody gets that opportunity so I hope they understand how rare it is and appreciate the fact that an opportunity has come."
