Valdosta Police and Paramedics responded to the 1500 block of Baytree Road just after 5:00 Wednesday afternoon, when a woman told 911 that a man attacked her with a knife.
She said the man ran off with a knife and a firearm, so police blanketed the area and called in Lowndes Co. deputies, the Remerton Police Department, other agencies, and police dogs to find him.
EMS took 25 year old Rachel Berry of Mayo, Florida to the hospital for treatment of a wound. As investigators were interviewing her, they determined that there was no man, and that Berry injured herself-- and lied to law enforcement about the entire incident.
Once Berry was treated, she was transported to the Lowndes County Jail. Warrants have been obtained for her for felonious False Statement and misdemeanor Filing a False Report of a Crime.
"At the time of the initial call, law enforcement had to act quickly on the information provided to them," said VPD Lieutenant Adam Bembry.
"The overwhelming assistance received by the surrounding agencies was in response to a reported violent armed offender in the area. Dozens of emergency workers were pulled off priority duty to assist, multiple Valdosta citizens were frightened, and to find out the victim made up the entire story is simply ridiculous. Anytime a citizen provides false information to officers, they will be held accountable," he said.
