ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Due to the recent school realignment, the Dougherty Co. School System is preparing for additional school bus riders.

Dougherty County Schools’ Transportation Director Kenneth Williams said five additional buses will be added to this year’s fleet to help with the growing number of students needing to ride one.

With the recent decision to close a couple of the schools, many students now have school assignments that require them to ride a bus.

Williams said his department has been busy these last several weeks preparing for the upcoming school year.

"Everybody’s excited to get back to school," said Williams. "And with the changes, there’s been a lot of unexpected jitters. But I think everybody’s ready to get back to work."

School bus drivers are in training sessions this week. They’ll take their buses out of the shop and on the road to learn their routes and work on their driving maneuvers.

The transportation department has also been waiting for the arrival of several new buses which will replace some of the older models.

Williams said all students will hopefully be assigned a bus by the end of the week.

Students and parents can check their E-link accounts to find that information or call 229-431-1265.
