TIFTON, GA (WALB) - Downtown Tifton's occupancy level is at 98% and the City's economic development director said that's good news for residents.
WALB News 10 spoke with the Bill Posey, the owner of the Tifton Drug Co. Posey moved his store downtown six years ago.
Tifton Drug Co. is just one of the over 250 businesses situated within Tifton's Inner-City Business District.
He described the downtown as vibrant.
"I don't think we could be in a better location. We're on one of the busiest corners in Tifton, probably right now. It's been great," said Posey.
Lequrica Gaskins, Tifton's Economic Development Director, said downtown Tifton acts as the City's heartbeat.
She said downtown areas usually include a majority of small businesses. Gaskins said these businesses are creating jobs, making an economic impact, and changing the tax base for Tifton and Tift County.
"There are a lot of things to do in downtown Tifton, it's at the pulse of our hand. We're excited about the development and we're excited about everybody's support," said Gaskins.
Gaskins said the downtown Tifton hasn't always seen this sort of "hustle and bustle." She credits the Downtown Development Authority for helping with the revitalization.
And there's more to come for the downtown area. The Lofts at Twin Bricks and an Italian restaurant "Fresco Italiano" are set to open soon on Tift Avenue.
There will be a grand opening event on Friday, August 4, 2017, at 5 p.m.
