Lee hospital application complete

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Lee County officials said Friday morning in a release that the Georgia Department of Community Health has informed the county that its Certificate of Need Application was received by the state, and is complete.

Lee County expects to have a decision on its application for a new hospital by mid-November.

"This is a great milestone in our process to develop Lee County Medical Center," said Lee County Commission Vice Chairman Billy Mathis. "We appreciate the hard work of the Department staff in making this decision, and we look forward to working with them further over the coming months."

The hospital is slated for land now occupied by the Grande Island Golf Course off Ledo Road, in Lee County.

Some in Lee County believe the current process is taking too long.

"It's just a matter of time, maybe even next year, that the state of Georgia will set aside the CON law that's extremely long, extremely expensive and totally unnecessary," Winston Oxford, the Executive Director of the Lee County Development Authority, said.

Phoebe remains focused on our mission of serving all in need of care in Southwest Georgia. We are committed to offering the region's best and most comprehensive healthcare and will continue to look for ways to elevate that level of care and expand our services.  We have full confidence that the Department of Community Health will closely and fairly evaluate the Certificate of Need Application for the proposed hospital in Lee County.

If the application is approved by the Department of Community Health, Lee County officials said they expect to break ground in early 2018.
