VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Six young men sorted through trash, looking for glass and plastic bottles as it traveled down the conveyor belt at Valdosta Public Works.

They are all juniors and seniors participating in the Great Promise Partnership (GPP).

The GPP is a grant funded program through the city of Valdosta's Community Development Block Grant for $578,619.

The grant employs students full-time during the summer and part-time during the school year.

The goal is to help them learn skills to be successful in the workplace.

Each student receives $10 an hour.

Senior Al Thomas knows that if he wants something, he must work hard for it.

“You've got a pray for what you want, then you gotta go get it. You can't sit down and be lazy. You got to go get it," said Thomas.

Each student enrolled in GPP is also on a college track.

Thomas is planning to attend Florida A&M University.?
